What is PRP Hair Restoration?

Hair thinning is a significant concern for many individuals, whether it is caused by genetics, age, hormones, health conditions, or from styling practices and/or products. With current advances in research in the hair restoration industry, new treatments have been created to help fight the problem. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a premier nonsurgical remedy for men and women that has shown remarkable effects in slowing down, stopping, and reversing baldness. PRP has displayed particularly promising outcomes in individuals with alopecia areata, non-androgenic female hair thinning/baldness as well as androgenic male pattern baldness. Dr. Art Quintanilla of Desert Medical Rejuvenation is proud to offer this revolutionary therapy in Rancho Mirage, CA by combining a strong solution of growth factors and bioactive proteins, Dr. Quintanilla can help strengthen your hair, resulting in longer, thicker, healthier locks.

Among many other factors, PRP induces hair restoration mainly by increasing vascular supply to the scalp which in turn increases nutrient and oxygen supply to the hair follicles, reinvigorating them and stimulating hair growth. Because it uses your own blood, there is no risk of allergic or adverse reactions.

Bear in mind that a true PRP procedure requires proper medical equipment, including a centrifuge capable of delivering platelet-rich plasma, as well as a special kit that has a specifically designed specimen tube that will also deliver the high platelet concentration necessary to perform an effective procedure. At Desert Medical Rejuvenation we use the FDA cleared PROGEN PRP® centrifuge and PROGEN PRP® tube kits from US manufacturer Crown Aesthetics, Inc., currently also in use in many prestigious university hospitals in the US; in other words, a regular lab centrifuge or a regular lab specimen tube are not indicated nor approved for a PRP procedure as they do not collect a high platelet concentration. We strongly advise due diligence in any medical office to all prospective PRP patients.

How is PRP Hair Restoration Performed?

PRP treatment for hair loss is a quick minimally invasive therapy that will take on average approximately 30 minutes.

Once the PRP is properly collected, it will be introduced directly into areas of your scalp that are bald or thinning by injecting it with very small gauge needle coupled with the use of a high flow air chiller before injection, thus making the procedure virtually painless; the end result is a minor feeling of soreness over the injected areas that is quickly resolved with over the counter analgesics.

For a successful result, hair restoration experts recommend a protocol of 4 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart each followed by a maintenance regimen of one treatment every 6-12 months thereafter; anything short of that will not produce desirable results.

Although the procedure is generally comfortable, for those patients with very high levels of anxiety or low levels of tolerance to pain, we offer the use of PRO-NOX®, a device that delivers a mixture of inhaled Oxygen/Nitrous which numbs the patient's sensations for several minutes, enough to allow the doctor to complete the procedure. The patient recovers 100% at the end of the procedure.
